British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "Including them were numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
