Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have asked to the public for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of foreign heritage in February 2020.
